About Us

Almost Midnight play original funky rock and are based in Aylesbury, Bucks in the UK. Front man Charlie Wood plays Bass, Sings and writes songs about life. The music is catchy and a bit cheeky, there is a great depth to the sound with elements appreciated by all levels of musical connoisseur which comes from the diverse backgrounds of the members. The line up is Bass, Drums, Keyboards and Guitar. This is augmented by a 3 piece horn section and two backing singers for bigger gigs.

Charlie Wood: I write songs because something inside me makes me do it and I can't stop. I play many instruments including bass, drums, trumpet, piano/synth/rhodes/wurli, sax, double bass, Irish whistle, dijeridoo and Yugoslavian foot banjo! Well my whole family are musical, so seeing as I've been immersed in it my whole life, I was bound to turn out a few tunes. I began playing the drums and piano when I was 6 and got to show my musical talent in amateur pantomimes. I then took to the trumpet when I was 9 and wrote my first song before I was 10 (which I performed in my first band at primary school called Chaz and the Dreamers.) We shattered the peace of our quiet village every Sunday, rehearsing in the front room. I went on to form my next band at secondary school when I was 13 called the 11th Hour which went on for many years until my best mate Jack (on keyboards) tragically died in a car accident. Life seemed to stop and I found writing so hard to do for a while. I was keen to get back and focus on my own work again so I started Almost Midnight. I'm also busy in other musical pursuits including composing for independent films, producing and sound engineering. I like to immerse myself in as many creative projects and have as much input into the world of music as I can. Once described by Keith Chegwin as “right good music, and what a lovely sounding bass”, and Jon Astley (Producer and Mastering Engineer for Eric Clapton, The Who, Abba, George Harrison, Tori Amos, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Jools Holland, Tom Jones, Judas Priest, Emmylou Harris, Tears for Fears, Led Zeppelin, Level 42, John Mayall, Toto, Stereophonics, KT Tunstall, Van Morrison, Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, Slade, Sting) said this about us: "When you do what I do you hear a lot of music, but every so often something comes along that really stands out. This album has great songs, arrangements and lyrics. It's fresh and funky, like Level 42 for a new generation."
